<Neil_> As I described in the little msgs I sent you before, I'm working on a little article project for the SGC on the entire effect that the "translation wars" had on shaping community politics. So far I've concentraited mostly on FF3, because that's where most of the information I've found has centered. No one I've talked to has really given me much info on what all went on between groups in the FF2 translatoins.

<Neil_> Was there any real competition there? I mean, was Demi trying to create some, or was it all basicly nice and peachy keen?

<manko> well, the main problem was that i based my earliest patches off of demi's old ff2 patch with the first town done
<manko> so he got pretty pissed off and flamed me about it. for about the first year i never really kept up with anything at all, well more like 6 months or so i guess. i just sat at home hacking with my only goal to have the game in english.
<manko> i think i started doing it before neodemiforce was even formed, around july or so of 97

<manko> i didn't know anything at all when i started out, i was like the evil newbie that could
<manko> but i never ever emailed people because my only internet access was at school for the first few months
<manko> so i learned on my own
<Neil_> Who was translating for you?
<Neil_> ah.
<manko> i was playing through the game with a dictionary
<manko> i hacked with msdos editor ^_^

<Neil_> Did you have any contact with SoM2Freak?
<manko> nope, not until after i started posting at demi's wwwboard
<manko> and he didn't really do anything with the ff2 project, although we were gonna start over again about a week after demi released his patch
<manko> but it kinda fizzled out
<Neil_> So demi was right when he wrote in his faq that SoM2 was probably going to try and redo the translation. ;)

<manko> i think i even still have some of the translations he sent me lying around somewhere ^_^
<manko> there wasn't much, just enemy names and items and stuff i think

<manko> yeah... i just kinda donated my translated monster names and that was that! ^_^
<Neil_> Yeah, I noticed that. It was like, everyone seemed to not want to repeat what had happened with FF2 and 3j. ^_^

<manko> that i too was a silly newbie once, but i was smart enough to figure things out on my own without help from smart people... so... be proud and live long and eat cheese and someday you too can be spoony like me!

<Neil_> And Nightcrawler, who was working on FF3, got into the middle finger awards section. Which is something I still don't understand. =)
<Neil_> Well, if I manage to club demi over the head and bring him into an interview kicking and screaming I'll ask him about that. ^_^
<Neil_> I don't think I can get an interview any other way from him. ;)
