Nintendo Utilities

Final Fantasy Improvement
This is a great utility. This program allows you to edit the overworld map and the first town of Final Fantasy I, you are presented with all the tiles and you can past them in any fashion you want to create your own town or overworld.

Version .02

Documentation
MakeRom
This really doesn't do anything except pull off a 6 byte .com header, and throw on the 16 byte .nes header. I only put it here with hopes that someday it will get better.

Documentation
Mario Improvement
This utility takes an all-time classic and makes it brand new again. Mario Improvement allows you to create your own Super Mario levels. It is great fun, and if you enjoyed the mario games you must try it.

Version .41

Documentation
Showcase
This program allows you to create hex values for 8x8 tiles quickly and easily. Simply draw it out, and get the hex values at the bottom. I like this program, the only problem is that it only works with two colors per sprite.

Version 0.6

Documentation
TetaNES
TetaNES is a utility to convert rom images to and from Pasofami, iNES, Famicom, FFE, and raw formats. A nice utility to have around.

Version .6.1

Documentation
Thingy
If you plan to do anything with Final Fantasy, use Thingy. This is a hex editor, much like Hexpose, but you can assign multiple characters to a single hex value. This is a necessity for hacking Final Fantasy.

Version 0.8

Documentation
Zelda Improvement
Much like Mario Improvement and Final Fantasy Improvement. This utility allows you to edit the Zelda game. I have not yet tried this one so I can't say much about it.

Super Nintendo Utilities

Naga Sprite Editor
Naga is a sprite editor for Snes and Nes game roms. Naga can do 1st, 2nd and 4th bitplane editing on both Nes and Snes roms. To me, Naga is the editor of choice. However, I do not neccessarily have the best taste.

Version 1.7b

Documentation
SnesTool
I use this mostly for patching roms with translation patches, and creating ips patches; however, SnesTool can also edit headers, and split and join roms, along with other functions that I myself have never used.

Version 1.2

Documentation
Snessor
This is fun. Snessor lets you rip sounds from SNES roms. The classic example is taking Ryu's fireball yell from the Street Fighter 2 rom. This is a lot of fun, also has a Windows 95 port listed below.

Version 2.1

Documentation
Snessor95
This is the Windows 95 port of Snessor listed above. It's not quite as good as Snessor for DOS, but it is still a fun utility. You can browse through the rom and pull out any sound you want.

General Utilities

Cart List
Cart List will give you the name of just about any game. Just put the program in the directory with the rom files, and run it to compile a list of the names.

Documentation
EmuTools
In the words of the creater of EmuTools, the program can "compare, list, verify, fix, and disassemble" rom files. There are programs that do what EmuTools does better, but EmuTools throws it all together in a single set of programs. Read the documentation for more information.

Documentation
HEx
HEx is a program for the TI-85 calculator. It is a creation of my own. Yea! You can convert from binary to hex, and also determine the hex value for an 8x8 sprite such as those used in NES roms. Only problem being you can only do one row at a time. I'm sure there are bugs, and the code is anything but optimal. I wrote this program in about an hour.

Version 1.0

Documentation
Hexpose
Hexpose is a simple hex editor. What separates it from most hex editors is that you can create table files that will assign any symbol you choose to a hex value. Instead of viewing hex and ascii, you see hex and the words from the game. Nice utility, I use it for any game other that Final Fantasy I.

Version 0.20

Documentation
ROMedit
Romedit is a hex editor. But what separates it from other hex editors is that it uses 8x8 tiles to display the file, and these tiles can be manipulated through special .tbl files. This makes hacking games such as Final Fantasy an easier chore.

Documentation
Xchar
Xchar is a tile editor for Nintendo systems. I have not used it too any great extent, but from what I have seen and what I have heard it is quite helpful for anyone who wants to get into graphical rom hacking.

Documentation
Xlate
Xlate makes translations, among other projects, far easier to complete, and complete to near perfection. Most translators either use this tool, or have in the past.
