Version 1.04 of Atari 800 has been released for the Mac. The main feature of this new release is that it works on MacOS X. In fact, if you have OSX and the CarbonLib, you can get a Carbon version at the hompage here.

7:46 - VisualBoy Release [1.4.5] - Jandar
Version 1.4.5 of VisualBoy, a Gameboy emulator for Windows, has been released, and I've added the emulator to our Gameboy emulators section. Here's what's new in this release:

• fixed bug with Turok 3
• improved digitalized sounds
• added color mode selection: washed colors (like real GBC) or dark colors
• added pause option
• you can enter up to 100 GameGenie and 100 GameShark codes (it will slow down emulator though)
• cheat codes will be saved with save game now
• multiple language support for English, French, Portuguese, Polish, Dutch and German!

15:23 - Hello Kitty's Flower Shop - Jandar
Suicidal Translations has released a 100% complete translation of Hello Kitty's Flower Shop, which I have added to our English translations archive. Granted, the game only had three words to be translated, but it is complete nonetheless, and to my knowledge, indeed, this is the first game to be translated entirely while sitting on the toilet. The question that truly boggles the mind, however, is whether InVerse has a toilet at his computer desk, or a computer in his bathroom... Thanks to Neil_ for the news.

18:54 - Dark Half Translation - SirYoink
My translation group, Klepto Software has released a new patch for Dark Half. This one, at approximately 20%, fixes a few graphical glitches, translates some more of the battle text, and has dialogue in part of the first town. Grab it from my site, or here.

13:47 - ViBE in beta testing - SirYoink
Richard Bannister, author of many emulators for the Macintosh is still working on ViBE, a Virtual Boy emulator for the Mac. The emulator is in beta testing, and he reports that most of the dumped games work to some degree. On his webpage, he requested that anyone with copies of the undumped games (SD Gundam Dimension War, Space Invaders Virtual Collection, Virtual Lab, and Virtual Bowling) contact him.

Version 0.37 beta 6 of MacMAME, the MacOS port of MAME, has been released, and I've added the emulator to our MAME section. Here's what's new in this release:

• In sync with the DOS 0.37 beta 6 build. [Brad Oliver]
• The front-end dialog is now larger than 640x480 in size. This means that you should run MacMAME in a minimum resolution of 800x600 if you want to see everything; lower resolutions won't be officially supported any longer. [Brad Oliver]

I don't really know the story here. It appears that the DOS port of FCE Ultra was updated to version 0.231 shortly after the Linux port was updated towards the first third of the month, but just now it came to my attention that the release had occured, so just now I am updating the NES Emulators section with the latest version.

BessaB has been hard at work on a French translation of the SNES game Villgust, and has released a patch (version 0.3b) of this translation that is 90% complete. This patch can be found on our French translations archive. Thanks to Biglo for informing me of this release.

• SGST is helping Opus on Wizardry:Suffering of the Queens, which is a 1st person dungeon crawler for Gameboy. They are also working on Chinese Fighter (!) for Gameboy.
  
• Prez is working on Last Bible 2 with a few people from SGST. Last Bible 2 is a Pokemon like game for GB that is set in a medieval setting (but it came first, and its not as cutesy). Hopefully we'll see a lot of progress.
  
• News post from Wakdhacks regarding Wonder Project J:Yes, you are not mistaken. I have finally returned back to school and have dedicated access to the Internet. This means I can get back to the work I started last semester. With the work that Bongo has been doing, and a little of my help, you should be seeing WPJ nearing the final stages. Sorry for the delay guys, I was as disappointed as you. But hopefully the break gave me the energy I needed to finish my work strong.

9:59 - SNES9x v1.31 - Airety
Recently, the newest version of SNES9x v1.31 for Windows was released. Here's whats new:

• Snes9x DirectSound code modified - the mixing block size is now always 10msfor Windows 95/98/2000 and 20ms for NT 4.x, now there should be no need toenable Sync Sound when a large sound buffer is required (helps emulationspeed). The maximum sound buffer length values have been updated to reflectthe smaller mixing block size.
  
• Changed the DirectSound code back to use an offset from the play positionas the place to write new sample data into the sound buffer - on NT 4.x thewrite position seems to vary randomly rather than being a fixed distancein front of the play position as documented. Now I know why I used the playposition originally!
  
• Changed the DirectSound code to fill the sound buffer at the write positionsupplied by DirectSound, rather than just before the current play position -should help reduce latency.
  
• Added an auto-detect method for interleaved mode 2 Super FX ROM images -well, not really auto-detect: if the game crashes and its a Super FX game,Snes9x assumes its in interleaved mode 2, demangles the ROM image and triesto run the game again.
  
• Had to update the Snes9x Windows registry version number as the additionaldiagonal settings make old registry settings incompatible.
  
• Added diagonal keyboard controls to the Windows port, as requested byseveral users.
  
• Changed PPU code to return zero when reading non-existent registers - thegame Equinox relies on this due to an original game coding bug.
  
• Included FMOD sound driver support to Windows port - people experiencingbroken sound or delayed sound, etc, might want to give it a try.
  
• Tales of Phantasia - un-interleaved format ROM memory map changes to matchodd ZSNES format, now the hacked ROM works.
  
• Changed NMI again. Made reading or writing to PPU register 0x4210clear NMI pending flag again, without this Super Tennis does not work.
  
• Changed NMI timing back to be the same as several versions ago and justspecial cased Cacoma Knight instead - although kept the code to preventthe re-triggering of an NNI more than once in the same frame.

9:52 - Minor Information Alteration - Jandar
Thanks to Frits Hilderink, the author of NLMSX, for informing me that the information listed under NLMSX in our MSX emulators section was outdated. Contrary to what our MSX page reported, NLMSX has supported sound for quite some time now, and also has many other features which have come about since the last time the aforementioned information was updated.

9:50 - Windows SMSPlus Discontinued - Airety
The author of Windows SMSPlus has announced that all work on the Windows version of SMSPlus has stopped by him. SMSPlus was a SMS/Game Gear emulator. Work on the DOS Port has NOT been discontinued as far as the author knows.

Version 1.38 of z26, an Atari 2600 emulator for DOS, has been released, and updated upon our Atari 2600 emulators page. Here's what's new in this release:

• Paddle games can now be played with a mouse or a PC trackball.
• Trackball emulation which allows joystick games to be played with a mouse or PC trackball.
• Lightgun support via the mouse or PC trackball (Sentinel, Shooting Gallery). Here is a diagnostic (guntest4.bin) that Eckhard wrote that you can use to test this feature if you don't happen to have a lightgun ROM.
• Some mouse support in the GUI. You can point and click to launch a game.
• Canyon Bomber and Backgammon are now treated as paddle games.
• Support for Megaboy cart.
• Support for overriding the bankswitching scheme for ROM images that z26 doesn't support automatically. Use the -g command line switch.
• There are some new features of particular interest to game developers including a scanline counter (-n) and the ability to emulate the PAL color changes (-o) which occur when a PAL game has the wrong number of scanlines.
• We also made some changes to, and added documentation for trace mode which can help developers debug their games.
• Special thanks to Eckhard Stolberg. He wrote much of the code in this release. But he also shamed me into doing some of the work too. ;-)

1:28 - New Surroundings - Jandar
As of this week my orientation at Case Western Reserve University officially began. So far..very boring, but you have to love the fiberoptic lines that they run into each dorm room. But anyway, the past few days have been spent moving into the dorm, getting the fiber interface card installed in my computer (I wish they would just give me the card and the drivers instead of having to install the card themselves..blah), and getting online. So now I'm officially online from CWRU. Happy day =)

20:28 - Raine Release - Airety
Raine WIP version 20000819 was released yesterday.Here's what's new:

• Kiki Kai Kai and Knight Boy now finally work correctly due to the help of Kayamon! He discovered a bug within GCC 2.9x which basically caused the problems. I tried to find a workaround but everything I've done to fix the Kiki Kai Kai problems caused the Taito F3 system games to crash so I had finally to switch back to GCC 2.81. This also caused the delay of the WIP updates because after a few changes I made to the source I didn't get Raine to compile anymore, which really got me into trouble, but now finally everthing is fixed, and Raine now has definitely less bugs that before =)
  
• Boukichi added Play Girls 1 & 2 to the Taito L-System driver.
  
• Tormod Tjaberg added Bubble Bobble 2 which is a clone of Bubble Symphony.
  
• Thomas Schmidt added a rom version switch to Soldam, it is now playable in Japanese and English.

• Dragon Quest IIIr has some progress for the first time in about a year and a half. Wanderer, the head of Illuminous and Dark Force the ASM wonder of DeJap. Visit the Illuminous page for some screenshots.
  
• A new site called The Blacklyon Denhas began translations of two SNES/Super Famicom games: YuuYuu Hakusho Final, a 1-on-1 fighter, and Shonen Ninja Sasuke, a side-scrolling beat-em-up similar to Double Dragon. They will only be translating the games, and not inserting the scripts.
  
• Obsolete Translations is doing work on Treasure Hunter G. They've released a screenshot of a sample font and a plea for translators. If you can help them, visit their site.
  
• Doublemoon Densetsu (for Famicom/NES) has some slight progress shown on TeleTrans Screenshots there!
  
• Ice Translations has released a complete patch for Chuka Taisen. You can download it from English Translations Page
  
• Also from Ice Translations Dunk Heroes release has been pushed back a bit because the Equip Menus need to be translated.

• The Lennus 2 Project had this to say: "Akujin has finished the translation of script seg L2-A! With this major Lennus-II milestone, I consider this a constructive 100%! But I'm calling it 99% until we get through all test phases and have named all monsters, items, and menues, not a big problem in the overall scheme of things...."
  
• News from Densetsu Translations:Inverse is assisting with the SD Gundamn Knight script, Vonpleck is almost done with the Crayon Shin Chan script, Light of Herakles has been handed over to toma and Bongo`. Megami Tensei 2 is being translated.

• KP Hack has released a 30% complete patch for the NES game Aigiina no Yogen. This is a platform game that is very strange and bizarre and stuff. You'll have to try the game out for yourself for a better description than that =). Download the patch here.
• Another group has started translating the game Angelique. Right now only a portion of the introduction is translated, so the game isn't exactly playable, but this minor patch can be found in our English translations section.

19:42 - NLMSX Release - Jandar
Version 0.28 of NLMSX has been released, and I've added the updated version to our MSX emulators section. Thanks go to M.E.P. for the news this time (as usual with MSX emulators). Here's what's new in this release:

• Solved a bug with SCC channel 1.
• Made some enhancements to the SCC emulation.
• Reworked the sound synchronisation. Framerates should be 50 or 60 on both windows 98/2000.

• Sprite: Fixed sprite intermediate render buffer clearing - fixes garbage sprites in Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball, probably others
• Source: Fixed source to compile with and now compiling with GCC 2.95.2, Allegro 3.9.32 WIP NOTE: All keymaps set in cfg files from previous versions are incompatible, and must be reset!
• Stability: No longer using GCC asm labels, as GCC doesn't seem to be handling them correctly causing stability problems
• Stability: Wasn't always setting es register up for string instructions, fixed
• DMA: Now updating DMA transfer size after PPU->CPU DMA
• Timing: Made several changes to improve IRQ function - fixes SF2 Turbo, New Ninja Warriors, probably others

20:21 - Jum's Atari 5200 Emulator Added! - Airety
Here's a summation of what it is (copied from readme!):

This is an A5200 emulator. It works OK, but nowhere near perfect. Manygames are playable (see the compatibility list).

It is written using DJGPP/Allegro. 6502 emulator source is heavilybased on a distribution by a guy called "Neil". POKEY sound emulatoris from Ron Fries. The rest is by me :)

20:08 - SNES9x Dev Journal Updated - Airety
The SNES9x Dev Journal was updated recently. Here's a small quote (its way too long to put on the page) about when we can expect another release:

Once I've tweaked the sound code a bit more and added a work-around to the draconian texture size limitation on 3d/fx cards for the OpenGL code, I'll make a new release.

fMSXfan is an MS-DOS MSX Emulator. You can read the file-hunter.com review here:

This emulator seems to be based on Marat's Fmsx again. It's a DOS port of this emulator, featuring MSX 1,2 and 2+ support. The command parameters seem to be the same as for FmsxDOS. As the development for FmsxDOS seem to be quite dead, this might be a good alternative. Docs are partially in Japanese, partially in English, but extensive enough to work with!

Well, tomy of Star-Trans dropped me an e-mail to let me know about a few happenings and errors of mine. Here they are:

• G-Trans has dropped Phantasy Star 3, Dragon Warrior 1, and Dragon Warrior 3. I left their patches up for anyone who might want to use them.

And stuff.

• Mage Slime has conducted an interview with one of the individuals responsible for the DQ3r translation, and you can find this interview here. Apparently the translation is actually progressing reasonably well, and we may see something from them in the next few months.
• A new translation group, KP Hack, will be working with AGTP on their Chaos World translation, which is currently sitting at around 65% complete and under ASM work.
• The Ranma team has been hard at work, and has had more extra ROM space than they know what to do with. This means there are realistically no limitations on the story that they can create with the translation. Both Anime and Manga versions are being translated, and both are nearing completion. The Anime version's script is translated, and merely needs a final run through to finish it up. The Manga version is apparently waiting on a single item translation and for the completion of the Anime version script.

(wraith) and Mage will be collaborating on Jajamaru's Demonstrike Legend: The Castle of the Gold Demon (aka sekrit projekt). From what Mage says, it is a Zelda like game, with the most feared final boss ever, the Beast Lord

A couple of different things have gone on regarding French translations. First, BessaB has released a 100 percent complete French translation of DBZ RPG, which has been added to our French translations archive. Also, I have finished going through the French translations archive and updating each translation, also adding countless new ones in the process. The overhaul of the French translations section is complete.

14:55 - New Table File - PKT Paladin
There's a new table file in the Table Files Archive and it is for the NES game Argos no Senshi. For those of us who do not know, Argos no Senshi has been translated by the Spoony Bard, and it is the japanese version of Rygar. The main reason it was translated was because it had better music than Rygar.This table can be downloaded and viewed in the Table Archive.

13:45 - Pasofami Release [1.3w6e] - Jandar
Version 1.3w6e, of Pasofami (an NES emulator for Windows with the strangest version number that I have seen in a while), has been released, and I've added it to our NES emulators section. Thanks to EmuHQ for the news.

13:39 - FCE Ultra Release - Jandar
Version 0.231 of the FCE Ultra Linux version has been released, and I've added it to our NES emulators section. Here is what the author had to say about this release:
FCE Ultra .231 for Linux SVGAlib is out. Everything that's new in this port is the same as the DOS port. Also, I've added a hack to "fix" an MMC5 emulation bug that caused "Laser Invasion" to lock up during game-play.

19:07 - MAME WIP - Airety
The MAME Work In Progress page was recently updated. Here's the news:

• 10th August 2000: Nicola Salmoria fixed the protection bugs in Slam Masters. Zsolt Vasvari converted several drivers for correct split screen functionality. Aaron Giles did some brilliant work and finally got the polygon graphics working in the preliminary Hard Drivin' / Stun Runner driver, which requires about 2 GHz to run properly
  
• 9th August 2000: Manuel Abadia fixed the bad graphics between levels in the Ultraman driver. Jarek Burczynski added preliminary support for the background graphics in Mag Max.
  
• 8th August 2000: Jarek Burczynski wrote a TMS5110 emulator and added speech support to Bagman. Nicola Salmoria implemented zooming tilemap functionality for Dead Connection, Football Champ and Metal Black. Greg Hackmann submitted a fix for the bug that prevented proper operation of the HISTORY.DAT and MAMEINFO.DAT files.
  
• 7th August 2000: KBD fixed, hopefully finally, the Tempest 150k reset bug. David Graves fixed a few graphical glitches in newer Taito F2 games and Metal Black now works. Ernesto Corvi fixed the VBLANK timings in the Playchoice 10 driver.
  
• 6th August 2000: Nicola Salmoria implemented correct tile/sprite priority system in Bionic Commando, Exed Exes, Ghosts 'n Goblins and Last Duel. Karl Stenerud fixed a few problems in the C 68k cores.
  
• 5th August 2000: Ernesto Corvi fixed the screen aspect ratio and some other bugs in the Playchoice 10 driver. Nicola Salmoria fixed some bugs in the artwork functions.

0:14 - Boycott/MacOS Bug - SirYoink
It appears that there is a bug in the current release of Boycott/MacOS that can cause some ROMs (notably Tomb Raider) to lock up the Mac. Richard Bannister has a fix planned, and will update the emulator soon.

19:39 - DarcNES DOS News - Jandar
The DarcNES DOS homepage has been updated with some news regarding the authors latest actions and the slowed progress of the emulator due to computer restrictions of the author. You can read the post upon the DarcNES site.

17:23 - Retrocade Site Status - Jandar
Anybody paying a visit to the Retrocade homepage recently has been greeted by the absence of the site, and a message explaining this absence. Here is what the Retrocade hosts had to say about the outage:

We had a bit of an accident here at fensende.com, hosts of www.Retrocade.com, All web pages, mail lists, and other information for the system was lost when our main system hard drive was burned up by a power brownout (thank Pacific Gas & Electric ;-).
We have sent the drive off to a data-recovery house, and hope to have the system back up in a few days.

Because they had broken links, I fixed the NSF archive and the Table archive. Also, to the Table archive section, there should be a few more tables. As for our 200,000th visitor, the lucky winner happened to be Jay Miley, who sent us a screen shot of the occasion. Unfortunately we aren't offering any sort of prize for the accomplishment, but I suppose that also prevents the rush of "fake" screen shots that generally follows any such achievement. Congratulations to Jay.

20:56 - Exciting Times - Jandar
It has been exciting around here lately, and ironically enough it has been the period of time when I was out of town. But things have been exciting and wonderful lately and the rest of the staff certainly stepped in to pick up the slack while I was gone. We also went over 200k hits while I was gone, and Airety forwarded to me the snapshop of the 200k hits. Once I get home and check the name of the visitor, I will be sure to post the name. Or maybe Airety already did ^_^, I guess I have some catching up to do. Anyway, the progress continues to drag on with the translation archives, and I have been squelching some bugs in the update scripts. Thanks go out to the staff for keeping things running smoothly over the past five days, and especially to Airety for boosting things up to an even higher level of excellence in my absence. The utilities and docs section have been in suspended animation for quite a while, but hopefully we will get the update scripts for these sections running soon and the sections completely converted. Thanks everybody for visiting, and for keeping this place going so strongly on goodwill alone.

I added a new table file for the NES game Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Pool of Radiance. Instead of deleting the ROM when I was finished making the table, I played it for a while. The game is pretty difficult, but classic Dungeons and Dragons style. Have fun with the table, which you can download at the Tables section.

22:54 - Laser v 0.10 Released - Airety
Before heading to California, Lopantu has released an update to his Multi-Arcade Emulator Laser. Here's what's new:

22:39 - CMNES 0.11 Released - Airety
CMNES is a Windows NES Emulator that requires Direct X 7. Here's what's new in 0.11a:

• Colours are now correct in a window. (finally)
  
• Added CPU speed indicator to the frames per second display. (separate it when I get time)
  
• Few small changes to speed things up a bit.
  
• Skewer pointed out the problem that was causing bomberman to lock in version 0.9, so I added the correct fix.
  
• I have noticed that the background colour bits in the ppu register are used to add a slight tint over certain colours, NOT to set the background colour as previously thought. Will change this soon.
  
• CPU cycles per scanline option added to the settings form.
  
• Mapper 3 added. (simple mapper but quite popular)

22:25 - Hu-Go v1.28 - Airety
I updated the Linux/Unix, MS-DOS, and new Windows Version of Hu-Go!, a TG-16 Emulator. Here's a bit on the Windows Version (which is all new)

For those who wanted to play Hu-Go! under windoz, I can bring a beta cversion of Hu-Go! under Win. I've been obliged to remove some features (true cd emulation, Mp3 playing and zip support). I'm waiting for some feedback especially from those who had troubles with the pure DOS one. Currently, the port is quite raw and was finally coded in quite a small amount of time (6 hours). It should run in full screen mode when it can and ... that's all. Oh, yes, until now, the fileselector isn't working so you'll have to specify the rom name on command line, or drag'n drop a rom from the explorer, and don't forget F12 to exit the emu.

DarcNES is a Multi-Console Emulator for Linux. Here's a list of what's new:

A new romhacking utility called PatchROM has been released. I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but it looks like it'll be very useful for script dumping and inserting. I'm lazy, so here's a cut and paste description of it's features:

To test out this wonderful new news script, I have decided to update again! Available now are 2 more table files for the NES ROMs of M.C. Kids and Might and Magic. The reason there are two for this update is that I don't want anyone to hate me for putting a table file for M.C. Kids on SGC. I didn't know that M.C. meant McDonalds, I swear! Anyway, enjoy them!

9:26 - Laser Ported to Linux - Jandar
Lopantu's Arcade System Emulator has been ported to Linux by Domenico Dato. Version 0.9 is currently available from the Multi-arcade emulators section.

1:02 - RockNES Release [1.110] - Jandar
Version 1.110 of RockNES has been released, and I've added it to our NES emulators section. Here's what's new in this release:

• Added color emphasis and monochrome mode;
• Added preliminary frame-IRQ, thanks to Ki for the NES findings;
• Added tick handler (60FPS when sound is disabled);
• Fixed frequency sweep on square wave #0, again, thanks Ki;
• Forced overscan color to be black (fixes that gray around the screen in some video modes);
• Fixed CHR RAM write-protection set by some mappers;
• NES PSG/VRCVI sound drivers improved a bit;
• %Final% format to saved games, now with the extension %.RSx (x=0..9), this means your saved state will be always compatible with future releases;
